How Likely Are You For Having a Lawsuit Filed Against You? |

The U.S. courts are filled with frivolous lawsuits. If you really think that you and/or your business are impervious to having a lawsuit filed against you, think again. The statistics are that you are two times more likely to go to the legal system than the medical system.
Here is a ridiculous and plain stupid lawsuit filed against a business. It's good for a laugh but the business ended up losing.
This business was really sick of being robbed too many times so the owners set a trap. They put a sign in the window telling would-be robbers that they may be electrocuted (no joke) if they attempted to rob the place.
In 1997, Larry Harris of Illinois broke into a bar owned by Jessie Ingram. Ingram, the victim of several break-ins, had recently set a trap around his windows to deter potential burglars. Harris, 37, who was under the influence of both alcohol and drugs, must have missed the warning sign prominently displayed in the window. He set off the trap as he entered the window, electrocuting himself. The police refused to file murder charges. Harris’s family saw it differently, however, and filed a civil suit against Ingram. A jury originally awarded the Harris family $150,000. Later, the award was reduced to $75,000 when it was decided Harris should share at least half of the blame.
The lawsuit filed may seem to be ridiculous, but we live in different times where many of the problems we face personally and/or with our business are legal-related...car accidents, moving violations, family-law issues, child custody, child support, alimony, creditor harassment and theft. In fact, a large portion of the U.S. has an ongoing legal problem right now.
There are two kinds of legal services available, Pre-Paid Legal and post-paid. With Pre-Paid, it will cost about $35 per month ($420 per year personal coverage, with business added $300 additional depending on size of business). With post-paid, it could cost $200 per hour and up.
